Current mood: grateful

A Ravenclaw slave is always a bit distracted....
The huge dramatic gratitiude vases were finished and lining the hallway, adorning the study and dining rooms. Yellow agrimony spikes, blue Canterbury Bells, and dark pink roses everywhere. Satisfied that Pucey would be happy with them, Roger settled in for a good bout of studying his father's writings. Pucey wouldn't be back till late afternoon.

Gaelic pig Latin it is, Roger decided about his own notes concerning the clues he'd found in his father's work journal. Interspersed with ancient runes, alchemical symbols and other glyphs that made up Roger's personal shorthand, it would look like nonsense, even to someone fluent in Gaelic. He couldn't be bothered with a complicated cypher that would take time to decode himself. This way, he could read over his notes on the fly. It had come to the point where he needed his sort of notes to reread and mull over before he could synthesize his father's clues. There were too many of them. They were too strange. Apparently disjointed, but Roger knew it in his bones that there was a message in them for him. And he also began to suspect that there was a chance that his father had died to protect that message.

Roger stared at the wall, distracted. Why on earth would someone murder his father over some new spell development? It had to do with brooms... but the ramifications... the applications to other magic... Roger sighed and forcibly pulled hismelf back from that specualtion. It was too painful to think his father had been murdered. And it didn't help figure out the spell he was convinced his father had invented and laboriously recorded. He had to get to Hogwarts and he had to visit his home on Lewis to see the clues his father had felt too important to leave in writing in his journal. Those two places he could handle. But "50 paces from the door of the PolyJuice Palace" could only refer to Knockturn Alley, and Roger had never in his life set foot on that street. Things happened to people who went down there, innocently window shipping or whatnot.

He sighed and finished reading his father's journal for the second time.

He was stuck. So he wrote out a few simple facts.

1. Robert Davies was a very talented broom maker.
2. He augmented several of the spells used to make racing brooms faster, safer, more comfortable, and more maneuverable.
3. The project he mentions several times in the last year of his life is the special edition anniversary broom.

Roger's eyes narrowed. Was it something about that particular broom? It was an honor to be the one to craft it. His signature would have been on it for all time. It was the sort of exhibition piece that found pride of place in a rich pureblood's house... like Pucey's... or ended up in the Ministry's Magical Sports Museum. They were impractical for actual flying though, so heavy with ornamentation and specia visual effects.

He read over his own notes again, but without those three missing clues, he was at a standstill. He went back to stating the simple and obvious.

4. He worked almost exclusively with wood his entire career.
5. That is, until this special edition which was to be gold... and needed to fly a short distance.
6. Robert was a spell inventer... who'd never had cause to work with gold before.

Robert was a master spell inventer, improving on spells used for centuries in racing broom making... and he'd just begun turning his talents to understanding the properties of gold...

A shiver ran down his spine. Roger felt like he was on the edge of something important... when his door opened with a crash. He looked up into Pucey's angry face and realized he'd completely forgotten the time.

Adrian had waited for half an hour in his study, expecting his slave to attend him within minutes after arriving home. Davies knew what time he was due, and could hardly be engaged in anything of vital importance that could keep him from performing his duties.

He had spent a little on admiring the large flower arrangements, somewhat amused by the theme of gratitude he could read from it - with the help of the small book on flowers and their meanings he'd obtained.

But after half an hour of waiting, the amusement had faded into annoyance. He rose from his chair and went to the tall French doors looking out into the gardens to see if the man might be out finding more flowers. But there was no sight of neither him nor the gardner. Bia was next to him, also looking out wondering what her master was seeing. Zelus was under the desk, eyes following his sister and his master intently. He sensed the tension growing in his master, recognised the sharp scent of anger.

Finally Adrian lost his patience and with brisk strides left the study and moved upstairs to his slave's room. His disobedient slave's room... With a casual handgesture and a non-verbal spell - although the intent and the force behind the magic was far from casual - he opened the door forcefully, not caring whether it would be slightly damaged from banging into the wall.

He remained standing in the door opening, looking darkly at his slave. Davies had been working on some papers. Papers that had kept him from attending Adrian. What the hell could be so interesting and all-consuming it made Davies forget his duties. Without saying anything, Adrian entered and steered directly towards Davies, and the papers. With an impatient move he grasped the papers and looked them over. One of his eyebrows arched sharply as he looked back at Davies.

"Explain yourself!" Adrian didn't put the papers back down.

"Oh shit!" Roger exclaimed, lurching to try to bow or kneel or get away. He wasn't sure what the sudden burst of fear adrenalin tried to make his body do. "Oh Master! I'm sorry!" he yelped settling for the best kneeling posture he could manage on the bare hardwood floor.

He looked up at Pucey with wide eyes seeing the revocation of all the privileges he'd been enjoying. He'd never bathed or shaved since their morning jog. His neglected lunch sat on the floor. How could he haev been so stupid.

He'd thrust the papers at Pucey, if the man didn't already have hold of them. But of course he couldn't read them.

Roger hadn't been ready to share his information. He wasn't sure of any of it. But now he had to. He need Pucey's help.

"I'm sorry. I'msosorryIlosttrackoftime," he babbled. "It's a spell, only I think it's an alchemical potion, my father was working on. I don't have enough clues. He's hidden them in places I can't even go to right now. I'm really really sorry for forgetting the time."

He looked up, fearful Pucey would do something to the papers.

The small burst of satisfaction at seeing Davies scramble to get into a subservient posture at the same time as apologising very profusely, babbling even, wasn't enough to overshadow Adrian's anger.

"And why would I care about what your father was working on before he was foolish enough to die without making sure his family would be taken properly care of?" Adrian said harshly before he looked at the papers again, and the gibberish they were filled with. He recognised some words, but it made no sense.

"And if you wish to retain your privileges, you clean yourself up immediately and attend me in the study, where you will translate this. I will not have my slave keeping secrets for me. Not when those secrets apparantly are keeping you from performing your duties!" Adrian threw the papers at Davies' head, turned on his heel and left the room, going downstairs to wait... once more.

Bia who had followed her master upstairs, stood a bit undecisively just inside the door, utterly bewildered by the situation. She wagged lightly with her tail, looking at Roger as if saying 'I'm not angry with you...' then trotted after her master, to see if she couldn't make him stop being angry.

"Yes, Master," Roger managed to say as the papers hit his face.

Damn, damn damn damn DAMN! he thought as he ran to the shower. He could have this done in a thrice if he could use his cursed WAND!

But no, he could have had an hour to groom himself. He'd had all day really.Focusing himself for the coming ordeal, Roger skipped shaving and kept the towel on his hair while he applied the salve to his arse. Oh yeah, Pucey might just decide to punish him there.

He gathered up his shorthand notes. There were only three pages of that and flew down the stairs nearly breaking his neck in the process. He entered hte study at a more normal pace and dropped to kneel on his customary pillow, the parchment held before him.

Water trickled down his back from his still damp hair. But the whole process had taken him less that 5 minutes.

Adrian was a bit surprised at the spped, but could see the man hadn't shaved. Unsatisfactory, even if the effort was acceptable.

"Read the papers to me." Adrian snapped, leaning back in his seat without making any moves to take the parchment.

Roger took a breath, forcing himself not to start explaining anymore, and just to read. Pucey was smart enough to get the gist of his notes, if not the exact ramifications.

"There is a clue in the Ravenclaw common room. A clue carved somewhere in one of the Ravenclaw quidditch bleachers. A clue in my tree house.

"The formula begins with a base of lead salts found only in China. Other ingredients are sea water, rye, yellow thistle, lava-found easily on the island of Hawaii, and chakra stones."

Roger looked up at Pucey to explain, "That's my shorthand for obsidian, topaz, citrine, emerald, sapphire, amethyst, and diamond."

He looked back down to continue reading.

"I know the Chakra stones, slave." Adrian said impatiently. It was interesting though, and his brain was already coming up with magical properties, possible effects of combinations of those ingredients, and an references he might've stumbled over in his own studies.

Alchemy... There were of course the obvious and eternal goals of alchemists, but would that apply here too? Davies Sr. had not been an alchemist, but a broom maker. A top creator surely, but not significant enough to be world renowned.

"Continue!"

Roger blinked at Pucey's vehemence, then continued reading. This wasn't some philosophical discussion. Pucey was most likely ready to beat him.

"Clue - Under the dragon in the L with four pillars. Question mark.

Roger had no idea what that clue meant. Were the 4 pillars figurative or literal?

"Three times. This will anger the goblins.

"Clue - 50 paces from the Polyjuice Palace.

"1. Robert Davies was a very talented broom maker.
2. He augmented several of the spells used to make racing brooms faster, safer, more comfortable, and more maneuverable. Though the company owner got all the credit and retained all patents.

4. He worked almost exclusively with wood his entire career.
5. That is, until this special edition which was to be gold... and needed to fly a short distance.
6. Robert was a spell inventor... who'd never had cause to work with gold before."

He raised his eyes to meet Pucey's He didn't have to tell Pucey about the natural magical properties that wood possessed that gold didn't... that made it ideal for wands and brooms.... while gold wasn't.

Adrian stared at Davies' upturned face for a long silent moment.

"Fucking Ravenclaws..." Adrian hissed. Everything had to be a bloody mystery with them and their oh so superior minds, and he had no doubt at all that Davies Sr. had been a Ravenclaw as well. The clues seemed more like taunting tidbits of inadequate information than actual clues. However, the L with four pillars and a dragon? Something rang a bell in that...

Adrian hadn't known though that Davies Sr. had been working on an anniversary broom...

The L... L could be a lot of things.

"What does L stand for, slave? Do you know?" Adrian's tone was sharp and angry. Even if Adrian was intrigued by this, Davies' infraction was far from forgotten and even further from forgiven.

Of all the things Pucey could be mad at him for, being a Ravenclaw made no bloody sense! Roger gaped at the man.

He shook his head. "I keep thinking library. But I'm not sure. Everything else I am sure of. He left these notes specifically aimed at me. Other people could guess at some of them, but the personal references to things only he and I spoke of, make sure that he only ever meant me to read it and understand it."

"Library..." yes, that was it. Several of the other clues were pointing directly at Hogwarts. A library with four pillars and a dragon... was actually at Hogwarts, but not exactly public.

"Ah yes, now I know what you speak of then." And that was all he was going to tell his slave for now. It would do the Ravenclaw well 'not' to know all for once.

"So, are you planning on searching for those clues?" Whether or not he would be allowed was an entirely different matter of course, and that much was clear from Adrian's highly condescending tone.

He knows? Roger gaped in surprise. How the hell could Pucey know something from his father's notes that Roger didn't even know?

Unless he's pretending he knows.

"Well yes, Master. Eventually... when I have time away, I would look into it more."

Of course now that Pucey knew about this, and undoubtedly understood its importance to Roger... he'd be sure to hold it over Roger's head for hte rest of the year.

Time was something Davies had plenty of, Adrian mused with a touch of humour. He just didn't have anything to use it for, being confined to the Pucey Estate. A situation Adrian had no intention of changing.

But this riddle had piqued his curiousity tremendously and that was never good for his resolve. He was so easily tempted by any kind of challenge. And the challenge to outwit a Ravenclaw on a riddle of this kind, of the Ravenclaw's own father's making... that was almost too much to resist.

He would have to pay a visit to old Hogwarts very soon. It wouldn't be out of order. Some of the best ressources on Legilimency, Occlumency and Obliviation were at the Hogwarts library, so he had a good escuse - if he even needed one. Alumni of high standing was always welcome after all. And he was nothing but that, both socially and academically.

Adrian returned his attention to his slave.

"You will not again attempt to conceal information from me in this manner, be it personal or ... professional." Adrian was aware the man had a private journal but had made no attempts to read it. Perhaps he would... or even should... "What is yours, is mine as long as you are my slave. Do you understand this, Davies?"

Water making it's way down his back from his damp hair tickled and raised gooseflesh on Roger's bare skin.

"Yes, master," responded automatically while his brain battered at him. He took a breath and dared to speak.

"However, perhaps it should be concealed from ... anyone else," he said, meeting Pucey's eyes, and willing the block-headed boy to understand.

Davies sheer gall had Adrian stunned for a moment. The lack of 'Master' in the last sentence, or even the lack of a proper request for permission to speak mattered less then.

Adrian arched an eyebrow sharply and met his' slave's eyes square on for a very long drawn out moment.

"You are trying to lecture a Slytherin about the necessity for prudent secrecy in nigh all matters?" Then he barked out a loud laugh and got out of his chair, brushing past Davies as he moved to the window out into the garden.

"Some times I do wonder if you're a glutton for punishment, or if you're actually stupid." Adrian turned around on his heel and looked at his slave again.

"Which is it, Davies?"

Pucey's eyes widened slightly before the usual sardonic eyebrow rose. Roger knew he'd missed something terribly important. Again.

Well, he'd never understood Slytherins... never even tried to understand Slytherins.... dismissed them from all his thoughts and plans actually, which left him at a severe disadvantage these days.

And oh yeah, he was already in a whole lake full of trouble today, as his dripping wet hair kept reminding him. By the gods he'd screwed up. His father's plans... everything...

Lowering his head he answered, "Stupid, Master." He surehell was not a glutton for punishment, though it galled to admit he was stupid. Still, shouldn't he be stupid at being a slave?

"Please forgive me, Master."

Reluctant defeat once more radiated from his slave, as the man kneeled there on his pillow. Adrian wondered what went on in Davies' mind right now, how he must feel... Stupid indeed. Only somebody stupid would sell himself like this and expect a year of servitude to be easy. Only somebody stupid would bring what was obviously coded messages with him into this complete and utter servitude and risk having them exposed to somebody those messages clearly weren't meant for. Only somebody stupid would thoughtlessly make the same mistakes again and again...

Somebody stupid and also arrogantly believing in his own cleverness. It would certainly do Davies some good to learn humility.

A trait you could use very well yourself, Devrat... Grandmother's voice berated him ever softly. Adrian didn't expect ever needing to learn that trait though.

"Indeed." Adrian closed the distance between them again and stood in front of Davies, reaching in to cup his chin - none too gently - and tilt the man's face up again.

"Do you deserve to be forgiven, Slave?"

His answer met with silence, Roger dared peek up through his lashes. Pucey appeared to be thinking over his slave's punishment.

Roger wanted to be forgiven. But did he deserve it?

He met Pucey's eyes when his head was wrenched up, bending his neck awkwardly. This treatment, again, sent a spike of fear through him, or a thrill of desire? Roger honestly couldn't tell the difference anymore. With this man touching him.

"No, master" he whispered through gritted teeth.

What he deserved was a long hard fuck.

Ah, there was a touch of intelligence after all. This entire situation proved beyond any doubt that you could be massively knowledgable and booksmart, and still be painfully stupid.

And turned on? Adrian looked searchingly into his slave's eyes, almost able to sense his emotions without making an actual effort to 'look'. Davies was so easy to read sometimes...

Adrian let his thumb slide slowly along Davies' lower lip.

"Why do you ask me for forgiveness then, when you know I'm the least likely to grant it? Did you hope for more leniency?" Because he 'had' been lenient the last days, following the path of positive reinforcement.

"What were you hoping for?"

The finger stroking his lip caused Roger's eyelids to dip. He forced them open when they wanted to shut.

Well, Pucey spoke truth there. He really had no reason to be lenient with Roger Davies, a burr under his skin at Hogwarts.

He forced his lips to begin speaking when they wanted to purse in a kiss. Roger began to blame the accursed collar for this accursed attraction.

"Master, I... " he stammered, then swallowed to buy a few seconds. "I hope for a chance to learn from my mistakes. I do learn Master."

"You will have to learn, or this will become a very long year for you." Adrian had clearly noticed Davies' reaction to the gentle ... caress? He wondered if not his slave eventually would be driven crazy by this obvious physical attraction paired with an equally obvious emotional and intellectual resentment. Adrian would enjoy watching that process, he knew that.

"And what have you learned from your latest mistakes? Have you even recognised what all you did wrong today, or at least in the last 15 minutes?" Adrian's thumb still rested lightly against Davies' lip.

That thumb, held so lightly against his lips, teased maddeningly as he spoke... and swallowed his anxiety.

He'd thought he was being obedient at least for the last 15 minutes... but leave it to Pucey to invent new rules, and insist on the most strict interpretation.

Roger's eyes narrowed a tiny amount. Had he said Master every third word? Probably not.

He finally let his eyes shut in defeat whispering, "I have not been at all subservient, Master. I got carried away... with reading... I... need to put your desires first, Master."

What bitter pill to swallow.

Davies was making an effort at least.

Adrian let go of his slave's chin and folded his arms over his chest.

"And to make sure you truly have learned, you will go to your room now. You will eat your dinner there and I suggest you enjoy your privacy as much as possible, because at 9 pm you will collect which ever you need from your room and move it to mine. I will have the elves clear a space for these things."

Adrian had no intention of being there at 9 pm though. He fully expected to study late today to be well prepared for the next day. His slave would simply have to await his Master's arrival... and desires.

"The privilege of having your own room is revoked. You are dismissed." It was terribly tempting to let his current level of anger fuel a harsh quick fuck over the desk, but anticipation heightened the experience.

"You are dismissed."

Roger gritted his teeth waiting for the ax to fall. When Pucey spoke his judgment, it didn't seem so bad. It was really quite merciful. He'd thought several times in the last few minutes that Pucey was about to backhand him across the face.

"Thank you, Master," he breathed, then repeated louder, "Thank you, Master," as he rose and headed out the door.

It wouldn't take a minute to gather his belongings, so he had a last few hours to himself.

Before moving to live in Pucey's room. Did Pucey actually want him there? Didn't Pucey, call him Master, want his own privacy?

Maybe Roger would be sleeping in the bathroom, or the closet, surely Pucey didn't want him in that huge comfortable bed every night...

To be able to concentrate fully on studying, Adrian sat down at his desk when Davies left the room and first called one of the house elves to instruct it of the change in the slave's accomodations, then leaned back for a few minutes, clearing his mind with a few well practiced excercises.

He worked efficiently until dinner that was served in the study, and afterwards revised what notes he had made. Finally, to round off the evening of work, he spent an hour in one of the deep leather-chairs in the library, reading up on one of the more complicated sources for Obliviation, at the same time sipping a glass of his favourite whisky.

At 10.30 pm, he felt ready and sufficiently relaxed to once more face Davies. Bia and Zelus trailed after their master towards and into his bedroom, Bia's tail wagging as she saw the other man waiting in the room. Adrian didn't acknowledge the man's presence before he had closed the door and moved to the middle of the room.

"Undress me, slave." He ordered, finally looking at Davies.
